National Craft Month

Eimear is running a limited series of three-hour workshop that will teach you how to make your own Viking Knit wire jewellery. These classes are part of the Design and Craft of Ireland National Craft Month in August 2021. You will receive step-by-step instructions from Eimear, who will guide you through the making process, from start to finish. She will also provide a detailed booklet with full instructions and photographs of every step that you can take home with you.

What’s Viking knitting?

‘Viking knitting’ is an intricate wire weaving technique that produces a versatile ‘rope’, which can be used to make bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. The technique’s exact origins and even name have been debated for years by jewellery makers. It has been linked to various ancient techniques including 9th century trichinopoly weaving and a textile-making technique called Nålbinding, used during the Viking age of 793-1066 AD in Scandinavia.

Regardless of its historical beginnings, Viking ‘knit’ wire weaving is a simple technique that does not require expensive tools or materials, and yet produces stunning results!

Workshop details

All of the tools and materials that you need to weave your own bracelet or necklace will be provided.
